Google Rolls Out December Core Update, Following November’s Release
Google has announced the rollout of its December 2024 core algorithm update, which is expected to be completed within the next two weeks. This update comes just a week after the November core update finished, closing out a year marked by significant search algorithm changes.
Google’s Announcement
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Google stated:
“The Dec. 2024 core update is rolling out, and we expect it will complete in two weeks. If you’re wondering why there’s a core update this month after one last month, we have different core systems we’re always improving. This past blog post explains more.”
Google’s message included a link to its November 2023 blog post, “A Q&A on Google Search Updates,” which explains the frequency and purpose of algorithm updates.
Understanding Google’s Multiple Ranking Systems
Google clarified that it operates with multiple ranking systems, each designed to handle different tasks. The company continually works on improving these systems to deliver better search results.
While Google tries to space out significant core updates, the post explains that it’s not always possible due to the volume of changes being tested and developed. Google stated:
“If we have updates that can improve Search, that have been developed over the course of several months, we release them when they’re ready.”
Advice for Website Owners
As with all core updates, Google has not disclosed specific changes in the December rollout. However, Google’s long-standing advice remains consistent:
•Focus on creating helpful, reliable, and people-first content.
•If traffic fluctuates after the update, review Google’s Search-specific guidance to identify potential areas for improvement.
Website owners can track updates and check rollout statuses via the Google Search Status Dashboard, which also offers an RSS feed for real-time alerts.
End of a Busy Year for Algorithm Updates
The December core update concludes a year of frequent and notable changes to Google Search algorithms.
As this rollout progresses, Search Engine Journal will monitor its impact on rankings and traffic patterns, providing timely updates as more information becomes available.
Stay tuned for further insights as the update continues over the coming weeks!
